REINCARNATION

BY LYDIA GROTE

Shattered
I picked up the pieces
of dignity
and happiness
that littered
the street like
broken glass

Reincarnated
I died at the corner of
N. Franklin and W. Monroe
I came back
as a woman

Shallow
The future was dim
I trudged through
to find
myself

Patched
A Band-Aid fix
to hide
my sadness

Graduated
I left you
I left this chapter
I left my self-loathing

Reincarnation II
Here I stand
In the city
That—
shattered me
killed me
swallowed me
But I am —
mended
reincarnated
powerful
whole
